The Story of Florence Fox

Florence Fox was the wife of Charles Fox and the original lady of the house when Grande Vue was built as their family home in 1906.

Florence and Charles named their Queen Anne–style mansion Coolangatta and raised their children, Rita and Eric, here. They remained at the property until Charles’s death in 1941, after which Florence sold the family home.

Florence is believed to have been an avid gardener, which inspired us to name this apartment in her honour. With its doors opening directly onto the garden, it seemed a particularly fitting part of the house to carry her name.

What We Love About This Apartment

What we love most about the Florence Fox Apartment is its connection to the garden. Open the French doors and the apartment flows directly onto the terrace and garden, with beautiful views across the Derwent.

Being on the lower floor, it feels like a peaceful little retreat within Grande Vue — with the space and independence of an apartment, while still being part of the hotel.

  • Once you have your key, the easiest way to access the apartment with your luggage is down the driveway, up onto the terrace and through the back door.

    You can also access the apartment via the internal hotel stairs if you prefer, but we recommend using the terrace entrance when bringing your bags in.

  • Important: To lock either door, lift the handle fully upwards and hold it up while turning the key.

    Left door

    • Unlock: Turn the key anticlockwise.

    • Lock: Lift and hold the handle up, then turn the key clockwise.

    Right door

    • Unlock: Turn the key clockwise.

    • Lock: Lift and hold the handle up, then turn the key anticlockwise.

    Tip: If the key won’t turn when locking, lift the handle a little higher and try again.

  • A complimentary light breakfast is available in the hotel’s guest kitchen. Enjoy locally made yoghurt, seasonal compotes, fresh fruit, gourmet muesli, artisan breads individually portioned in the freezer, preserves and marmalades, Tasmanian juices, quality teas and compostable Vittoria coffee pods—all light, fresh and locally sourced.

    We also bake a cake a couple of times a week, and you’ll often find biscuits and other sweet treats from local bakeries. Please help yourself and make yourself at home.

    Guest Kitchen Notes

    • Please place used dishes in the dishwasher.

    • For safety reasons, use of the oven and cooktop in the shared guest kitchen is not permitted. You are welcome to use the oven and cooktop in your apartment.

    • Complimentary breakfast items and sweet treats are reserved for guests staying at the hotel that evening. Thank you for your understanding.

  • At times, the hydronic heating on the lower floor may take longer to activate, particularly when the upper floors of the hotel are warmer.

    The Dyson heater and panel heaters will warm the apartment quickly. Please turn them off when they are no longer required or whenever you leave the apartment.

    Fans are provided during warmer weather. To preserve the heritage character of the building, there is no air conditioning—but Tasmania’s fresh air is always available through the windows and French doors.

  • The iron and ironing board are stored in the apartment kitchen. The ironing board can be folded out beside the dishwasher.

  • Housekeeping is available from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hang the tassel on your door by 12:00 pm if you would like the apartment serviced.

  • The power switch located behind the kettle controls the oven, cooktop and other kitchen appliances. Please ensure it is switched ON before use.

  • If you have a car, you are welcome to park at the bottom of the hotel driveway during your stay. We simply ask that you keep the top of the driveway clear for guest drop-offs, luggage and deliveries.

    Alternatively, free street parking is available nearby on Mona and Clarke Streets. If you prefer to park on the street, please let us know and we can provide a parking permit for you.

  • Check-out is by 11:00 am.

    We hope you’ve enjoyed your stay with us. Before you leave:

    • Please leave your apartment key and parking permit in the box on the reception desk.

    • Late check-out may be available on request, subject to availability and an additional fee.

    • You’re very welcome to leave your luggage with us and collect it later in the day.

    • If you’ll be returning to collect luggage after check-out, please ask us for a separate front door key before leaving
