Welcome to the Florence Fox Apartment. Here you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable stay, along with helpful information about the apartment and our favourite ways to experience Hobart.

The Story of Florence Fox

Florence Fox was the wife of Charles Fox and the original lady of the house when Grande Vue was built as their family home in 1906.

Florence and Charles named their Queen Anne–style mansion Coolangatta and raised their children, Rita and Eric, here. They lived at the property until Charles’s death in 1941, after which Florence sold the home.

We continue to research the Fox family to learn more about Grande Vue’s first occupants. While we cannot be certain, we hope Florence would approve of the work we have done to breathe new life into her former home and garden

  • You can enter the apartment through the side entrance on the lower floor of the hotel or through the rear French doors. Your apartment key will open both entrances.

    The side entrance is the easiest way to bring your luggage into and out of the apartment.

  • o unlock the left French door, insert the key and turn it anticlockwise.

    To lock it, lift the handle upward and hold it in place while turning the key clockwise.

    To unlock the right French door, insert the key and turn it clockwise.

    To lock it, lift the handle upward and hold it in place while turning the key anticlockwise.

  • A power switch located behind the toaster controls the oven, cooktop and other electrical appliances. Please ensure this switch is turned on before using them.

    Please place used dishes in the dishwasher and ensure the kitchen is left tidy.

  • A complimentary light breakfast is available in the hotel’s guest kitchen. Enjoy locally made yoghurt, seasonal compotes, fresh fruit, gourmet muesli, artisan breads individually portioned in the freezer, preserves and marmalades, Tasmanian juices, quality teas and compostable Vittoria coffee pods—all light, fresh and locally sourced.

    We also bake a cake a couple of times a week, and you’ll often find biscuits and other sweet treats from local bakeries. Please help yourself and make yourself at home.

    Guest Kitchen Notes

    • Please place used dishes in the dishwasher.

    • For safety reasons, use of the oven and cooktop in the shared guest kitchen is not permitted. You are welcome to use the oven and cooktop in your apartment.

    • Complimentary breakfast items and sweet treats are reserved for guests staying at the hotel that evening. Thank you for your understanding.

  • At times, the hydronic heating on the lower floor may take longer to activate, particularly when the upper floors of the hotel are warmer.

    The Dyson heater and panel heaters will warm the apartment quickly. Please turn them off when they are no longer required or whenever you leave the apartment.

    Fans are provided during warmer weather. To preserve the heritage character of the building, there is no air conditioning—but Tasmania’s fresh air is always available through the windows and French doors.

  • The iron and ironing board are stored in the apartment kitchen. The ironing board can be folded out beside the dishwasher.

  • Housekeeping is available from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hang the tassel on your door by 12:00 pm if you would like the apartment serviced.

  • A parking permit is guaranteed for guests staying in the Florence Fox Apartment.

    We do not have a dedicated car park; however, free street parking is available nearby on Mona Street and Clarke Street. Many spaces are unrestricted throughout the day, while others have a two-hour limit from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Restrictions do not apply outside these times. Please see our online parking map for further information.

    You are welcome to pull into the hotel driveway to unload your luggage before parking nearby. Please display the parking permit clearly and return it to the box on the reception desk when you check out.tem description

    • Check-out is at 11:00 am.

    • Late check-outs after 11:00 am must be arranged for an additional night.

    • Please leave your apartment key and parking permit in the box on the reception desk.

    • You are welcome to store your luggage with us and collect it later in the day.

    • If you are returning after check-out, please collect a separate key to access the front door.
