A Guide to Hobart & Beyond

I moved to Hobart from Sydney almost 20 years ago, but I still remember my very first visit. It was a chilly July day, I’d been told I had to try a pie from Jackman & McRoss, and I found myself looking up at snow-capped kunanyi / Mt Wellington and wandering the streets of Battery Point. It was love at first sight.

Battery Point is still one of my favourite spots in the world – leafy streets, pretty cottages and grand old homes, all set above the River Derwent with sailing boats dotted across the water. It feels quiet and village-like, yet you’re only a short stroll from Salamanca Place, the waterfront and the CBD.

Over the past 20 years we’ve watched Hobart change in the best possible way – with MONA, a growing food and wine scene, festivals and events throughout the year. I love seeing how passionate Tasmanians are about what they grow, make and create, and it’s a big part of what makes this little city so special.

Rather than list everything, I’ve put together a guide to the places I genuinely love and keep going back to – in Battery Point, around Hobart and a little further afield. Think of it as a curated short-list to help you plan your time here.
