Our Neighbourhood – Battery Point

Battery Point is one of Hobart’s oldest and prettiest pockets — leafy streets, sandstone cottages and grand old homes with a story or two. It was once home to sailors, shipwrights and whalers, and you can still feel that coastal history as you wander around the neighbourhood.

Today it’s a relaxed heritage suburb dotted with great cafés, pubs and local favourites, and it’s an easy stroll to Salamanca Place, the waterfront and the CBD. We love it here because it feels quiet and village-like, but you’re still right in the heart of Hobart.

Ash’s Guide to Hobart (The Places I Love)

I’ve lived in Hobart for nearly 20 years now and I genuinely love this little town — it has so much to offer, from brilliant food and bars to cafés, walks and easy day trips. There are heaps of amazing options, but rather than list everything, I’ve shared the places I truly love and keep going back to myself. Think of this as my personal Hobart short-list.

  • Our go-to picks for no-fuss, tasty food
(Most of these are on Uber Eats too!)

    Still Thai – Hobart CBD
112 Elizabeth St, Hobart TAS 7000
Fresh Thai with plenty of veg and good-quality protein. It doesn’t taste heavy or overly MSG-y. You can also grab it on Uber Eats if you’re feeling lazy in your room.

    Vietnamese Pho – Battery Point
Shop 9, 33 Salamanca Pl, Battery Point TAS 7004
My pho spot. The broth tastes clean (I don’t think they go too hard on MSG), everything’s fresh, and they’re always busy — which is a good sign.

    Ti Ama – Battery Point
Shop 13, 13 Castray Esplanade, Battery Point TAS 7004
This is where I’ll go for sourdough pizza takeaway — simple, tasty toppings, always reliable.

    Kinoko Deli – Hobart CBD

1 Murray St Pier, Hobart TAS 7000 (opposite Parliament House gardens)
Handmade chocolates made with love — and their hot chocolate is a must too.

  • A few of my favourite ways to get outside around Hobart — good walks, good dips, and a little ocean therapy.

    Swimming at Opossum Bay
About a 50-minute drive from the hotel on the Eastern Shore and absolutely worth it. Calm, clear water, a stunning little beach, and you’ll often spot stingrays gliding past.

Nutgrove Beach Swim – Sandy Bay
For a quick dip close to town, I head to Nutgrove. Easy to get to, lovely stretch of sand, and perfect for a simple beach swim.

Knocklofty Reserve Walk – West Hobart
A great close-to-town bushwalk with beautiful views over Hobart. Lots of dog walkers, plenty of wallabies, and the occasional snake — so keep an eye out. I usually do the full loop up and back, which takes about an hour.

    Bellerive to Howrah Beach Walk
I love heading over to Bellerive (you can drive, or jump on the ferry from the waterfront). From there, it’s a lovely coastal walk along the beach, over the headland and out to Howrah Beach, then back again. Easy, scenic, and a great change of pace — with plenty of good cafés nearby for lunch afterwards.

Lauderdale to Seven Mile Beach Coastal Walk
I start at the Lauderdale Yacht Club car park (off Kirra Rd at Roches Beach) and walk along the coast towards Seven Mile Beach. On a sunny day the water is that unreal aqua colour — one of my happy places. I often finish with lunch at Angie Sue in Lauderdale.

Brooke St Pier, 12 Franklin Wharf, Hobart TAS 7000 (sometimes also Long Beach, Sandy Bay)
When: Selected Fridays 4:30pm–9:00pm, mostly Oct–Mar — dates change seasonally so worth a quick check closer to your stay.
Evening market with food trucks, local makers, bars and music — a lovely waterfront wander at dusk.

    Salamanca Market – Saturday
    Salamanca Place, Hobart TAS 7001
When: Saturdays 8:30am–3:00pm (year-round; except if Anzac Day or Christmas Day fall on a Saturday).
Still one of the best places to soak up Hobart’s buzz and pick up amazing Tassie produce and handmade goods.

Hill Street Grocer – Sandy Bay
Corner of T.T. Flynn St & Churchill Ave, Sandy Bay TAS 7003
I love going to Hill Street for supplies — especially the cheese deli. They’ve got all the yummy French and local cheeses and are very generous with tastings. The fruit and veg is some of the best in Hobart too.

    Mako Seafood – Constitution Dock
Constitution Dock, Hobart TAS 7000 (Sullivans Cove waterfront)
Always beautifully fresh seafood — simple, local, and consistently great.

Easy day-trip markets (if you feel like a drive)

Sullivans Cove Whisky experiences – Cambridge (short drive)
If guests are up for a little drive, their tours/tastings are excellent and very Hobart-Tassie.

    Movies / shows

    State Cinema – North Hobart
Such a good rainy-day classic. Grab a wine, settle in, and make an afternoon of it.
